The Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS) provides a fully funded intensive language study during the summer to a diverse group of students at every level of language learning. Students must be enrolled at the time of application. The opportunity is offered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affair with the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and to build relationships between the people of the United States and other countries.…

The Class of 1938 Fellowship provides a $5000 award for sophomores and juniors to complete a non-credit-bearing global opportunity abroad during the summer. Supported by an endowment from the University of North Carolina’s Class of 1938, a class that matured during the second World War, a period characterized by immense loss of life, world-wide suffering, and devastation. Global Orientation on Culture + Ethics is designed to help students evaluate expectations, anticipate potential cultural and ethical challenges, prepare for engagement with global communities, and develop intercultural competencies. First-time travelers and experienced globetrotters alike can benefit from session topics like “Voluntourism” + the White Savior Complex, The Ethics of Healthcare Abroad, Race + Ethnicity in a Global Context, Local Global Opportunities, The World We See: Global Photography, and Gender + Sexuality in Cross-Cultural Travel.
