Esse Quam Videri: Self-portraits of Muslims in North Carolina
Access Esse Quam Videri here
In response to the stereotypes of Muslims and in recognition that it is human nature to fear what we do not know, community based artist Todd Drake is working with Muslims in North Carolina to create self-portraits that share real, rather than seeming, reflections of self to a wider audience.
The goal of this art project is to draw a richer portrait of Muslims living North Carolina, build bridges between Muslims and non-Muslims, and promote civic and cultural integration of Muslims into the wider society.
Outcomes of this project will include an exhibition, book, and informative website. The book will feature selected self-portraits, participant statements, contextualizing essay, and documentation of process.
**Dick Gordon recently interviewed one of the participants on his NPR show, "The Story."
