The Scholars’ Latino Initiative (SLI) is dedicated to providing higher education opportunities for Latino youth in North Carolina. Through the completion of a structured three-year program, selected students from under-sourced high schools develop an enthusiasm for higher education, prepare academically for college success, receive assistance in the college application process, and seek scholarships to make college enrollment a reality.
Over the past 12 months, SLI mentors and faculty participants have dedicated close to 10,000 volunteer hours to meet program goals. In 2011, SLI will expand significantly by partnering with two additional colleges and high schools, thus augmenting its volunteer work force to 95 mentors and replicating its successful model beyond UNC-Chapel Hill.
