INTS 290: Intercultural Education in K-12 Classrooms

The program is currently offering a 3 credit hour service-learning course for program presenters. Please read the description below for more information. This course is ideal for visiting international students and returning study abroad students. It is also open to any UNC-CH students interested in sharing knowledge of cultures, customs and beliefs from other areas of the world or engaging K-12 audiences in learning about various international issues or current world events.
This class meets the Public Service Scholars Program requirements.
Course Description
INTS 290: Intercultural Education in K-12 Classrooms
This experiential learning course combines guest speakers, discussion and hands-on workshops to build intercultural communication skills and investigate current and effective methods of teaching international education in K-12 school systems across North Carolina. Students will have the opportunity to use their experiences abroad and/or knowledge of international issues to develop classroom presentations on an international topic, country or culture of their choice. These presentations will be shared during service hours in area K-12 classrooms through the Carolina Navigators program, helping to promote global learning and understanding among North Carolina youth.

Requirements
- Interested students must be willing and allow room in their schedules for a minimum of 3-5 service hours each week or 30 hours over the course of the semester to provide international presentations in area K-12 school classrooms.
- Interested students must have significant international experience or knowledge.
Examples include foreign citizenship, a study abroad experience lasting at least one summer, international parents or upbringing, or extensive knowledge of an international topic or current event.
