Classroom Speakers Programs

SCHEDULE
June 11th:
12:30 - 1:00pm Registration, First Floor 1:00-2:15pm Session 1: Roundtable Introduction of Programs and Attendees
Participants goals and expectations will be ascertained as well as current methods for program implementation.
2:30-3:45pm Session 2: Technology
Discussion Leaders: Jessica Mendez, North Carolina Center for International Understanding;
Rosina Chia, Assistant Vice Chancellor Global Academic Initiatives, East Carolina University;
Elmer Poe, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Outreach, East Carolina University
Jessica Mendez will lead a discussion on using technology such as Elluminate software to connect university study abroad students with K-12 classrooms for virtual presentations while overseas. Rosina Chia and Elmer Poe will share their work on an interdisciplinary course “Global Understanding” in which students have the opportunity to video conference with peers from 3 different countries for 5 weeks each over the course of a semester. 4:00-5:15pm Session 3: Speaker Training
Discussion Leaders: Sarah Bergstedt, Director of International Outreach, Appalachian State University; Tara Muller, Carolina Navigators Program Coordinator, Center for Global Initiatives, UNC-Chapel Hill
Sarah Bergstedt will share ideas for speaker training and evaluation. Tara Muller will share resources for speaker training including a handbook of activity ideas and a video of humorous skits developed to help prepare presenters for K-12 classroom visits.

June 12th:
9:00-10:15am Session 4: Service-Learning
Discussion Leader: Jenny Huq, Director of Service-Learning, UNC-Chapel Hill
Jenny Huq will discuss the concept of service-learning. A UNC course, "Intercultural Education in K-12 Classrooms," offered through the Curriculum in International and Area Studies will be shared as one model for integrating service with classroom speakers programs into the university curriculum for academic credit.
10:30-11:45am Session 5: Program Management: Evaluation, Databases and other Resources
Discussion Leader: Tara Muller, Carolina Navigators Program Coordinator, Center for Global Initiatives, UNC-Chapel Hill
A database for automating scheduling correspondences and organizing data will be highlighted. A toolkit for evaluating program outcomes will be shared. Evaluation findings from UNC-Chapel Hill and others will be discussed. Local teachers and classroom speakers will share their expectations for such programs.
11:45am-1:30pm Working Lunch
Discussion Leader: Sara Suiter, Classroom Teacher, Washington DC
Sara Suiter will present her research findings on best practices among classroom speakers programs and provide her personal opinions from a classroom teacher's perspective on implementation of such programs in the K-12 setting.
1:30-2:45pm Session 6: Libraries
Discussion Leaders: Janet Stucky Smith, Assistant Director, The Ohio State University;
Nancy Heingartner, Outreach Coordinator, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Janet Stucky Smith will lead a discussion on creating and using "Discovery Boxes" for hands-on use in K-12 classrooms where it is difficult for speakers to travel, or to be used in combination with a speaker. Such boxes contain an array of items such as clothing, traditional toys, maps & postcards, cooking utensils, and various other materials, along with a description and background information for each item.
Nancy Heingartner will discuss acquiring and managing a lending library collection of documentary and feature films, music and curricular materials.
