Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program
CAMPUS DEADLINE -Thursday, November 12, 2009 by 5:00 pm
The federal deadline is December 1, 2009 but applicants MUST meet the campus deadline to be eligible for this award.
This program funds fellowships (3 to 12 months in length) to faculty members who propose to conduct research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries.
A faculty member is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she:
* Is a citizen or national of the United States or is a permanent resident of the United States.
* Is employed by an institution of higher education.
* Has been engaged in teaching relevant to his or her foreign language or area studies specialization for the two years immediately preceding the date of the award.
* Proposes research relevant to his or her modern foreign language or area studies specialization,which is not dissertation research for a doctoral degree.
* Possesses sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the research project.
Expenses Covered by the Award:
* Travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research.
* Maintenance stipend for the fellow related to his or her academic year salary.
* An allowance for research-related expenses overseas, such as books, copying, tuition and affiliation fees, local travel and other incidental expenses.
Absolute Priority for FY 2010:
A research project that focuses on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories). Please note that applications that propose projects focused on Western Europe are not eligible.
Competitive Preference Priority for FY 2010:
A research project that focuses on any of the seventy-eight (78) languages deemed critical on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs).
Competitive Preference Priority for FY 2010:
Research projects that focus on one of the following fields or topics: Environmental Science, Ecology, Climate Studies, Development Studies, Economics, Public Health, Education, or Political Science.
On behalf of UNC-Chapel Hill, the Center for Global Initiatives submits a single application consisting of individual faculty applications that are judged separately by Department of Education review committees. Awards are administered through the Center for Global Initiatives.
Applications must be submitted via the e-grants online applicaton by 5:00 pm, Thursday, November 12, 2009.

It is the applicant's responsibility to meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the Department of Education (ex. focus on language and area studies, length of narrative, font regulations, etc.). Please carefully review the guidelines within the Federal Register linked above.
