The Center for Global Initiatives is currently focusing particular attention on four themes and encourages proposals that address one or more of these themes:

- Global Health
- Migration, Citizenship and Identity
- The Globalization of the American South
Students who apply for the C.V. Starr Award MAY NOT also apply to the following Center for Global Initiatives awards:
- Carolina Undergraduate Health Fellowship

Because there is some overlap between these funding opportunities, students must choose only one for which to apply during any given academic year.
