David McSpadden most recently served as senior vice president for marketing at Charles Schwab & Company. He led Schwab's brand advertising, the marketing of their mutual fund marketplace, and was responsible for the launch and management of Schwab's advice services for affluent investors. David resides in San Francisco.

Elbert Avery ‘82
Elbert Avery is global finance manager with IBM in Durham, North Carolina, where he has worked for 20 years. Elbert attended Carolina as a Morehead scholar, and he earned his MBA at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Leslie Benning ‘79
Leslie Benning is the founder and CEO of Benning International in New York. She has over 20 years consulting and line management experience in developing consumer and customer market insights as the foundation for growth strategy, acquisitions and new products, both domestically and internationally.

Hunter H. Bost ‘88
Hunter Bost is a partner and co-founder of McDuff Capital, LLC, a private equity and investment advisory business located in Durham and New York City. Prior to relocating to the Triangle, Hunter served as principal in the New York office of Electra Partners, Inc., a global private equity investment firm. 

Michael Boyatt ‘56
Retired in 1995 from a distinguished 35-year career with Exxon, Michael Boyatt served as the vice president and
director of Esso InterAmerican, Inc., Exxon’s subsidiary in Latin America. Michael lives in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Swadesh Chatterjee
Swadesh is CEO of Swadesh Chatterjee & Associates, Inc., in Cary, North Carolina. He is one of the co-founders of TiE Carolinas, a group of successful businesspeople whose primary goal is to develop and assist fledgling entrepreneurs.

Arthur DeBerry ’57, LLBJD
Arthur DeBerry is president of Arthur DeBerry & Associates Inc. Insurance Agency in Durham, North Carolina. In 1994 he formed Wealth Creation Conservation Planners Inc., a registered investment advisor.

Alston Gardner ‘77 (ex-officio)
Alston Gardner is managing director of Fulcrum Ventures, LLC, a venture capital firm that invests in early stage technology and health care companies. Alston was the founder and former CEO of OnTarget, Inc., a global training and consulting group headquartered in Atlanta. Alston resides in Aspen, Colorado.

Lucía V. Halpern ‘85
Following a twelve-year career with Goldman Sachs in London and New York, Lucía Halpern is now a private investor and an advisor to new business. Her final position with Goldman Sachs was as senior vice president responsible for private equity asset management. Lucía currently lives in London, England.

Anthony Harrington is president of Stonebridge International, LLC, an international strategic advisory
firm based in Washington, D.C., co-founded with former National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger.
Previously, he served as ambassador of the U.S. to the Federative Republic of Brazil.

Rolf K. Hoffmann ’87, MBA
Rolf Hoffman is senior vice president for Amgen Europe, in Luzern, Switzerland, where he is responsible for setting Amgen's commercial strategy in Europe and continuing to grow Amgen's presence in Europe. He was previously general manager of Lilly Deutschland Pharma Holding in Germany.

Everette James is a partner with LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, LLP, in their Washington, D.C. office. Everette’s practice concentrates on international regulatory and trade issues and domestic legislative matters.

Neal Johnson ‘76
Neal Johnson, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is president of Neal Johnson, Ltd., an import company that sells antique furniture and accessories to the interior design trade.

William (Bill) E. Lucas '73
Bill Lucas is a career foreign service officer at the U.S. Department of State, currently serving as director for European Union and regional economic affairs. Other recent positions include coordinator for OSCE affairs, director of U.S. policy on human rights, humanitarian, and social issues arising in the UN system, and political counselor at the US Embassy in Manila, Philippines.

D.G. Martin, Jr.
D.G. Martin, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, writes a syndicated newspaper column, “One on One,” and is host of UNC-TV’s Bookwatch series. D.G. has served as secretary and later vice president of the 16-campus University of North Carolina System. Most recently, he was director of the Trust for Public Land’s North Carolina and South Carolina programs.

Kevin McAnaney ‘71
Kevin McAnaney is a nationally recognized expert on health care fraud and abuse. Kevin has recently returned to private practice in Washington, D.C., concentrating on health care fraud and abuse matters. Before that, he served as chief of the Industry Guidance Branch of the Office of Counsel to the Inspector General.

Charles (Charley) McLendon, Jr. ‘81
Charles McLendon was recently appointed president of Primus Asset Management in New York, one of the largest managers of credit swaps in the global credit risk transfer market. Previously, Charley served as managing director at Bank of America in their Global Investment Grade. He has also served as global head of their structured products business and led their credit derivatives effort.

Donald Munro ‘82
Donald Munro is founder and president of The Global Wine Company in Sausalito, California, and serves on the boards of Eagle & Dominion Asset Management in London, Bridgehouse Properties in San Francisco and the Willow Creek Foundation, which supports a charter school in Sausalito. Donald began his career on Wall Street with Kidder Peabody & Co. in New York and London before moving to Montgomery Securities in San Francisco.

Tamara Norman is senior vice president with Ketchum Public Relations and director of its New York Corporate Practice overseeing global multi-discipline communications work for clients including FedEx and SkyTeam, the international airline alliance.

Earl N. (Phil) Phillips, Jr. ‘62
Phil Phillips, of High Point, North Carolina, is president and chief executive officer of Phillips Interests. He has also served as U.S. ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean having been nominated by President Bush in July 2001.

Anne Platt most recently served as the director of primary care services at the Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, Florida. Anne was responsible for primary care services for 40,000 individuals and an annual operating budget of over $7 million.

George Platt is managing partner of the Fort Lauderdale office Shutts & Bowen, LLP, a law firm with 150 attorneys in offices throughout Florida as well as in London and Amsterdam.

Ellen Proctor serves as environment, health and safety (EHS) counsel and manager for General Electric’s operations in Asia and is based in Hong Kong.

Frank E. Proctor ‘85
Frank Proctor most recently served as general manager of the Pacific Edition of Newsweek International in Hong Kong. Frank joined Newsweek International in 1991, and has also served as special projects director in New York.

John Russell ‘77
John Russell is the chief administrative officer of Quintiles Transnational Corp., where he serves also as general counsel and manager of the company’s Government Relations. Prior to joining Quintiles, John practiced law for twelve years in the Research Triangle Area. John resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Ambassador Brenda Schoonover (ex-officio)
Brenda Schoonover is a retired career Foreign Service Officer. Before retiring to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in August 2004, her last overseas assignment was a three-year tour as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. She also served as U.S. ambassador to Togo from 1997-2000.

Jay Middleton Tannon ‘78
Jay Tannon recently joined the law firm of DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US, LLP as a partner in the Corporate and Securities practice group in Washington, D.C. Jay will help lead the firm’s private equity practice in the U.S. and will serve as its co-chair. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Jay headed up the Corporate and Securities Practice for the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia offices of the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop LLP.

Christine (Chris) Vick ‘71
Christine Vick is vice president of The Cohen Group, an international strategic consulting firm in Washington, D.C., headed by former U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen. From 1996 to 2003, Christine was a partner at the international government relations firm of Andreae, Vick & Associates, LLC.

Peter Coclanis, Ph.D.
Peter A. Coclanis, Albert R. Newsome Professor and former chair of the history department, is Carolina’s first associate provost for international affairs and heads up the Office of International Affairs.

Margie Crowell ‘76
Margie Crowell was appointed assistant provost for international affairs in October 2003 after a 17 year career in the Office of University Development. She most recently served as associate vice chancellor for development.

Arne Kalleberg, Ph.D.
Arne Kalleberg is Director of International Programs in the College of Arts and Sciences and Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology. He has been a member of the university faculty since 1986 and has served as chair of the department of sociology. 

Daniel Lebold ’96, MSW
Daniel Lebold serves as the director of development for global education. His position is divided between the College of Arts & Sciences and the Office of International Affairs. Daniel comes to UNC-Chapel Hill after five years as vice-president of development for Triangle Family Services, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jamie May
Jamie May is the executive director of the Arts & Sciences Foundation and senior associate dean for the College of
Arts and Sciences. Jamie is leading the Carolina First campaign for the College of Arts & Sciences.

Susin Seow '96
Susin Seow is the associate director of development for global education. Her position is divided between the College of Arts & Sciences and the Office of International Affairs. Susin comes to UNC-Chapel Hill after six years with Triangle United Way.

Niklaus Steiner, Ph.D. ‘88
Niklaus Steiner is the director of the Center for Global Initiatives (formerly known as the University Center for International Studies), where he also teaches courses on nationalism and international migration.
